  • Lesson plan 1 objectivesStudents will be able to:
    -Define the four (4) elements of a SWOT analysis
    -Explain the purpose of a SWOT analysis
    -Recognize and define SWOT specific vocabulary
    -Examine the SWOT matrix for a well-known company
    -Create a SWOT analysis and matrix for a company of their choice in collaboration with their peers
    -Critique their peer‘s SWOT analysis visuals
  • Anticipatory set or lesson opening (to activate students` prior learning or draw student interest or involvement)-Ask students what they think the acronym SWOT stands for in the context of marketing. Display the letters either on a board or computer screen. Do not allow students to use their phones or computers!
    -Have students record their responses on an online collaboration board (if this method is used be sure to have students “like” each other`s posts) or hand their responses on sticky notes that should be hung in one location.
    -Discuss responses as a group.

  • Guided Practice-Students will watch the 8.31 minute video: What is SWOT Analysis? | A SWOT Analysis of Amazon (source: Two Teachers, YouTube).
    -Stop video at 4:45 and have students try creating a SWOT for Amazon on their own.
    -Continue the video and allow students to compare the completed Amazon SWOT matrix to their own work. Encourage students to add or subtract information as needed.
    -Direct students to read the article: AMAZON SWOT 2020 | A SWOT analysis of Amazon and/or the infographic.
    -Ask them to identify 1 additional item to add to the Amazon SWOT matrix.

  • Independent Practice/Differentiated ActivitiesSWOT Analysis Project - create a SWOT analysis for a well-known company (adapted from Niki Kube, Business Educators Facebook group):
    -Provide students with a copy of the SWOT Assignment Project Sheet that contains instructions, organizers, and rubric.
    -This project can be performed small groups or individually if needed. All members of the group must complete the project/visual independently.
    -Direct groups to select a well-known company from the provided list to analyze.
    -Introduce students to various tools that they can use to create their graphic such as Canva, Microsoft products, Google Suite products, other graphic design software programs that are accessible.
    -Students will print their creations and hang for a Gallery Walk
    -Students will comment or vote on their peers final products using sticky notes.
    -Groups will present their final creation and respond to the comments. All members must participate in the presentation.

  • Family: Any opportunities to involve parent/guardians and other family members in this project?-Extra credit assignment: ask students to create a personal SWOT analysis using the information learned in this lesson. Explain that they should treat themselves like a brand and that their future opportunities (job, higher education, etc.) can depend of it. Thinking about these factors now can help them plan ahead. They must include input from family members and obtain their signature as proof!
